"Rememberng Names"
by Lucinda Secrest McDowell
Leadership
Principle #74 ![]()
Leaders who are motivated to encourage others are the ones who motivate the best.
excerpted from
Women In Leadership
I
hurried into the ladies' room on my way to the seminar.
My husband and I were in Atlanta for a conference including
several excellent speakers, including Gordon & Gail MacDonald.
In the three years since we had seen them, a lot had happened.
I literally ran into Gail at the sink. After a brief greeting,
her first question was, "How is Justin adjusting to your
recent move? I've prayed for him."
Amid
the hundreds of people she knows, she remembered
that our eldest son is handicapped and finds change difficult.
Her concern encouraged me. But it did not surprise me.
Eight years prior, I had read her words in High Call,
High Privilege which admonished Christian leaders in the
discipline of learning people's names. "Haven't you told people
you really love them when you remember even their
children's names?"
Now
here I was on the receiving end of that love
from an older woman I respect and admire. I realized how
essential the power of encouragement is for any woman
who truly wants to have an impact on her world.
