Why I Hated Valentine's Day

by Lucinda Secrest McDowell

For many years I hated Valentine's Day.

I guess it was because I had bought into the notion

that Valentine's Day was only for lovers, for those who had

that special guy or gal to send them flowers or candy.

For those who had a date!

And since I wasn't one of those lucky gals, I tended to

face each Heart Day with a real attitude. I didn't

actually resent those who had special plans that night,

I just wanted to be one of them.

By the time I reached my 30th Valentine's Day my attitude

had changed dramatically. No, I wasn't married nor did I have that

"special someone" in my life. But my relationship with another

Special Someone had grown so dramatically that

Valentine's Day no longer threatened me with a pity party.

I was in love with God, absolutely convinced of His

unconditional love for Me and therefore filled with hope

that even if earthly love never came my way, He was enough.

I memorized these words and have shared them countless times

and not just on Valentine's Day!

Whom have I in heaven but You?

And earth has nothing I desire besides You.

My flesh and my heart may fail,

but God is the strength of my heart

and my portion forever."

Psalm 73.25-26 NIV

Do you feel all alone today?

If you have a relationship with God, you are never alone.

Do you feel weak and weary?

Why not ask God to be the strength of your heart?

It's an interesting postscript to add that this

Valentine's Day I do have a date

--- with my husband and the father of my four children.

I am grateful for his love and faithfulness, but even so,

the number one Love of my life is Jesus.

And He will be my portion forever.
