Christmas In The South

by Lucinda Secrest McDowell

It’s Christmas and the sky is bright,

There is no chance of snow tonight.

We children play outside all day,

But never have we seen a sleigh

AT CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTH.

Our family comes from far and near

With lots of yummy food to share.

There’s cornbread stuffing and sweet potato pie,

Mamalu’s eggnog and ham piled high

FOR CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTH.

The churches fill with songs of joy

Celebrating Mary’s baby boy.

And towns can still display those mangers

Without the ridicule of strangers

ON CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTH.

We snuggle by the fire’s glow

With air conditioners turned down low;

While sipping on hot chocolate,

And dreaming of the toys we’ll get

THIS CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTH.

I’ve lived a lot of places since I was a little girl,

And Christmased in some fascinating corners of the world.

From Boston to Chicago and the San Francisco Bay,

From Seattle to New England ~ which is where I live today.

And I know that what’s important is my faith and family,

Which means that I can celebrate wherever I may be.

But my roots are deep, my memories clear

And I feel a longing every year

TO CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTH.
